Mass affluent use a variety of vehicles for their retirement investments with 401(k) being the most popular method.
Retirement investing has moved back to the top of the financial to-do list for mass affluent Americans. In preparing for retirement, men are more aggressive with their retirement savings goals as they anticipate saving $855,000 on average while women anticipate saving $623,000. Overall, the mass affluent anticipate saving $736,000 on average for their retirement, but currently only have an average of $161,000 saved.

When asked what retirement investments respondents are primarily using for retirement, the majority of respondents said a 401(k), followed by personal investments (such as stocks, bonds, etc.) and an IRA (either Traditional or Roth).
